Many patients often ask how to safely get back into working out after a long break from exercise. The simple answer is often the best answer. “Just start something!” Often the most difficult part is simply turning up, start by planning a simple half hour of exercise into your daily schedule.

Regardless of whether you are starting now… or re-starting a goal you set on the 31st December – here are a few tips for keeping new year goals and staying on track with your health and fitness.  These tips can be used any time of year, not just on New Year’s Eve!

1  Choose Something You Love

Exercise is much easier to do if it’s something you truly love to do – be it bushwalking, yoga, cycling, swimming, dancing, gym work or rock-climbing. The main thing is choosing something within your capability, without causing yourself any harm.

2  Warm Up and Cool Down Properly

If you are just starting a fitness regime ease into it, warm up and cool down properly, that way you’re less likely to hurt yourself and be so sore you can’t go back for several days…or worse, give up all together!

3  Find Ways to Keep Yourself Accountable (and Consistent)

Being consistent is the key to achieving a fitness goal, having a training buddy, group activity, team sport or personal trainer will help keep you accountable and on track.

There are many benefits gained from regular exercise not only looking better, having a sense of well-being, exercise helps us manage our stress and assists in maintaining our bone density. Not to mention the increase in your energy levels and a happier state of mind.

4   Don’t Forget Weights and Resistance Work

As we age, it’s harder to keep your fitness as our muscle mass tends to decrease. Adding light weights or resistance work helps to maintain our muscle mass, keeping us more mobile for longer, gaining a better quality of life.

As the saying goes, “use it or lose it”. Having good muscle tone helps protect joints by giving them stability and strength reducing the risk of falls and injury.

5   Be Prepared for Some Soreness (and Don’t Let it Derail You!)

If you are just getting back into working out, expect to experience some soreness.  Don’t let this derail you, as it is perfectly normal.
